The tower is 371 years old.
After being closed down for the past year or so, restoration works on Gozo’s historic Dwejra tower have finally been completed.
The tower was first built in 1652 by Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris as part of his efforts to guard Malta and Gozo from Ottoman corsairs.
In 1744, during the time of Grand Master Pinto, it used to stand guard to prevent people from climbing up the Fungus Rock as the fungus that grew there was believed to have medicinal powers.

It was used again as by the Royal Malta Artillery during World War I and II.
Some of the restoration works carried out on this historical tower include the replacement of certain stones on the external part of the tower that had extensively deteriorated.
The external stairs were also restored alongside the ceilings of the tower.
Additionally, a new electricity system was installed.
The tower is managed by non-governmental organisation, ‘Din l-Art Helwa’ and will soon be open for visitors once again!
