Ghost story alert! Fort St Angelo & the mysterious Grey Lady
Has she payed you a visit?

Roxanne Grillo

Sceptics hear us out! For many years, whispers of ghost stories have been heard around the streets of Malta, instilling fear and havoc among children and bed readers. One of these famous tales is that of the Grey Lady, also known as the White Lady, who supposedly haunts Fort St Angelo, because, well, why not?

According to a post by Heritage Malta, the Grey Lady was allegedly the mistress of one of the Castellans of the Castrum Maris, an appointed official or governor of a castle at the fortification, who apparently hailed from the de Nava family.

During their affair, the man became suspicious of his wife’s knowledge concerning his secret love affair. In order not to get caught, instead of owning up to his mistake, the man decided to clean up his mess by creating another one. He ordered for his beloved mistress to be murdered!

After the assassination, it is said that her spirit remained to roam the fortification, sporting ‘a long dress’ and a grey ‘pointed hat’. Sadly, no longer in keeping with the fashion of the times…

If you don’t believe us, well, during renovations, the remains of three bodies were found, one female and two males. It is believed that the skeletons belong to the mistress and her murderers.

Several locals have shared their own experiences with the spirit in comments to Heritage Malta’s post, with one stating that in 1968, a man on duty saw the ghost of the Grey Lady standing at the edge of his bed, whilst sleeping in the Upper Fort Area. From that day onwards, he started to sleep in the Lower Fort Instead. We don’t blame him!

On the contrary, another user expressed her disappointment, saying that she visited the Fort and took many pictures, but sadly the Grey Lady didn’t photobomb any… what a shame!

Have you ever heard of the spirit at Fort St Angelo? Do you believe the tales?
