The Malta Railway operated between 1883 and 1931.
The Hamrun Railway Station has been extensively restored and is now looking pretty much the same as it was over a 100 years ago!
It has been painted in the same colours that the station used back in its hay day. The restoration also involved extensive cleaning, a new electricity system and a new floor amongst many other works.
Thankfully, even before the restoration the station did not fall in complete disuse as it is used as the headquarters for the 1st Hamrun Scout Group Duke of Argyll's Own.
This newly restored railway is open for visitors this weekend. There’s even an exhibition detailing all the history behind the station. You can browse the exhibition today from 4pm to 8pm and Friday to Sunday (29th February – 3rd March) from 10am to 8pm.
The Malta Railway operated between the years of 1883 and 1931 and ran a single line from Valletta to Mdina and back. However, it stopped in multiple stations and settlements on its way including Hamrun, Birkirkara and Floriana.
