From the Metropole to the Adelaide! Here’s a look back at some of Sliema’s old hotels
Sliema is one of the most popular spots around the islands, with both locals and tourists (in a normal world sans pandemic) flocking to the seaside town, especially during the summer months for an evening stroll or a delish ice-cream.
While there are a bunch of hotels and accommodation areas in Sliema, the town was littered with them even more so back in the day. Here’s a look back at some of the hotels you could find in Sliema.
“The Meadowbank Hotel welcomes you to Malta” a brochure reads, and it seems it didn’t disappoint. The Meadowbank was in an ideal seafront spot (Tower Road) and just a stone’s throw away from the main shopping centre.
The Plevna had “the best hotel value in Malta,” according to the brochure. The Plevna is no longer in operation but the building is now still in the same business, being home to 1926 Hotel & Spa. The Adelaid Hotel, also in Tower Road was “situated in the healthiest part of Sliema commanding a fine sea view. Unfortunately, this hotel is also gone.
Hotel Tigne Cort also had great views of the Med and offered a private beach. Facebook users remember working at this hotel, with one even remembering a time when he played music there twice a week. And finally, the Metropole Hotel in Dingli Street. This one is no longer there but back in its hay day it was a top notch place to be. The building ceases to exist as it was pulled down and flats in one of the corners of Dingli Circus now stand in its place.
Do you remember these hotels?
