Former Zabbar hospital transformed into living space, with rooms rented out for less than €200 a month
A welcome idea!

Looking for a place to stay? This unique living proposition might just be the solution you, and many others are looking for, given Malta’s overprices property market for many citizens.

What was formerly St James Hospital in Zabbar has now been transformed into a living space – yes, that’s right – complete with individual rooms that are being rented out for an affordable €170 per month, a post on Facebook noted.

“You have a shared kitchen and shared bathroom for every six rooms on each floor,” the post said, showing the façade of the potential new home.

One sarcastic comment: “any rooms in Mt Carmel Hospital please?” sparked quite the retaliation, with the Facebook user responding strongly. “You might find it funny because you have a secure roof over your head, but for people who cannot afford astronomical prices, these are clean private rooms with their own key and some might consider this a godsend.”

Zabbar’s St James Hospital moved to Tarxien last year with the Zabbar hospital closing its doors that same year. Could we potentially see more of such buildings being converted into affordable housing spaces? We actually might, considering Malta’s affordable housing remains a problem to be solved.
