April brings a burst of floral beauty to the Maltese islands! Dwejra Tower loves shining a spotlight on flora and fauna every month and, this month, it’s time for the Maltese Stocks (Matthiola incana subsp. melitensis) affectionately known as 'Giżi ta’ Malta' in Maltese, to shine.

Endemic to the Maltese archipelago, the Maltese Stocks is a charming perennial plant that adds a touch of elegance to the local landscape. With its low to medium height, this species forms a delightful dwarf or small shrub, boasting silvery green leaves that are fleshy and densely packed. Over time, the plant develops a woody base, adding to its resilience and longevity.

One of its most captivating features is its lilac or violet flowers, which adorn the plant during the spring months from March to May. Delicate and fragrant, these blooms are a testament to the island's natural splendour.

Found in dry, rocky, or coastal areas, the Maltese Stocks thrives in its native habitat. However, its scarcity has led to protective measures under Maltese law, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and significance of the Maltese Stocks!
