Flaming red! Have you ever spotted this striking tree in Valletta’s Castille Square?
A bold splash of colour in the city!

Lyndsey Grima

Standing tall and radiant in the heart of Valletta’s Castille Square is one of the city’s most eye-catching natural landmarks — the Delonix regia, commonly known as the Flame Tree. True to its name, this ornamental tree puts on a fiery display of orange-red blossoms each summer, turning heads and adding a splash of bold colour to the historic cityscape.

Originally native to Madagascar, the Flame Tree has found a comfortable home in Malta’s warm Mediterranean climate. Its wide, umbrella-shaped canopy provides welcome shade during the hotter months, while its feathery, fern-like leaves add a tropical touch to the urban environment. But it’s the tree’s stunning summer bloom that truly captures the imagination - vivid clusters of flowers that transform the tree into a blazing focal point.

In Castille Square, just steps away from the Prime Minister’s office and with views of the Grand Harbour, the Flame Tree stands as a beautiful contrast to the Baroque architecture surrounding it. It’s a favourite among photographers, tourists, and locals alike.

So next time you're in Valletta during summer, look up...the Flame Tree might just steal the scene!

Have you ever witnessed the Flame Tree in all its glory?
