Fire! Watch the French occupation come to life at Fort St Angelo on Sunday 8th March
Ready to step straight into one of Malta’s most turbulent chapters? On Sunday 8th March, from 10:00am to 3:00pm, Fort St Angelo will transform into an 18th-century garrison as the Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta recreates a day in the life of a French unit stationed on the island during the dramatic occupation of 1798–1800.
Visitors will witness members of the 19ème demi-brigade d’infanterie de ligne standing guard, conducting military drills, maintaining weapons, preparing food and carrying out daily camp duties, all dressed in meticulously accurate period uniforms and equipped with authentic gear.
Though brief, the French occupation left a lasting mark on the islands. Napoleon’s arrival brought sweeping reforms but also rising tensions, ultimately sparking a Maltese uprising and a two-year blockade. That conflict would pave the way for the beginning of British rule in Malta.
Few locations could be more fitting for such a reenactment. Originally a medieval stronghold, Fort St Angelo later became the headquarters of the Order of St John, played a central role during the Great Siege of 1565, and served as a major naval base right up until 1979. Its walls have witnessed centuries of conflict, power shifts and transformation, making it the perfect backdrop for this living history experience.
Tickets are available at normal admission rates and can be pre-booked online, purchased from any Heritage Malta store, or bought at the door on the day. Heritage Malta members, as well as senior and student passport holders, can attend free of charge.
