This 31st March, step aboard history as Heritage Malta hosts a special Freedom Day celebration at Fort St Angelo in Birgu. Running from 9:00am to 7:00pm, the full-day programme invites visitors of all ages to explore the fort while enjoying a spectacular view of the traditional Freedom Day Regatta in the Grand Harbour.
Visitors can discover the fort’s remarkable past as HMS St Angelo, once the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean stronghold. Free guided tours throughout the day will highlight its strategic importance under British rule, its role as a naval shore establishment, and how it withstood heavy bombardment during World War II. Guests can also learn about daily life within its formidable walls.
Below the fort, skilled rowing teams from cities and villages across Malta will compete for the coveted Palju in one of the country’s most cherished maritime traditions. Families can enjoy nautical-themed activities for children, with the Sea Cadets adding further historical colour and insight.
Admission is €3, with tickets available online, from Heritage Malta sites, or at the door. Last entry is at 6:30pm.
