You might be familiar with the work of photographer Michele Agius and artist Jacqueline Agius, but did you know that these creative powerhouses are mother and son? Although they usually work separately, their recent collaboration is truly something to behold! Jacqueline put Michele’s breathtaking aerial photography on canvas, coming out with some truly beautiful visuals.
One of the images shows the entirety of Birgu, ending with Fort St Angelo at the tip that stretches into the Grand Harbour, framed by boats on both sides. Above it all, Valletta stretches across the top of the image, with the distinctive outline of St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral rising against the distant backdrop of Marsamxett Harbour.
Another remarkable piece shows Floriana’s iconic ‘Fosos’ square, a place that takes on a completely different character depending on the time of year. In this particular piece, the square is depicted in its serene, peaceful state, with the St Publius Parish Church’s striking red dome dominating the scene. The emptiness of the square gives it a quiet, almost contemplative mood, inviting the viewer to pause and take in the beauty of Floriana in its more tranquil form, contrasting to its lively atmosphere when a concert is on!
If you’ve never heard of them, checking out the rest of their work is highly recommended. Michele’s photos and Jacqueline’s paintings are feasts for the eyes – here’s hoping for more of these mother-son collabs!
