Experience the epic rock-opera! Jesus Christ Superstar comes to Valletta this April
Promising a bold, edgy and iconic production

Francesca Vella

As Easter approaches, fans of musical theatre can look forward to an exciting treat this April. Jesus Christ Superstar, one of the most iconic rock-operas of all time, will be making its way to the stage of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta from April 11th to 13th.

Brought to you by FM Theatre Productions, this bold and contemporary rendition of the globally beloved musical will have audiences on the edge of their seats. With music by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber and powerful lyrics by Tim Rice, this exhilarating production promises to bring the powerful combination of rock music and theatre back to life in the Mediterranean. Jesus Christ Superstar has captivated global audiences for over 50 years, having opened back in 1971, and will be taking Malta by storm this spring!

The story takes a look at the final days of Jesus, uniquely told from the perspective of Judas, set to a score that brings together rock and soul in some stunning solo and ensemble numbers. This fresh take explores themes of faith, fame, betrayal, and revolution, resonating deeply with audiences, particularly during Easter time.

Under the visionary direction of Chris Gatt, the production promises an edgy, modern flair, reflected in the cast photos featuring Francesco Nicodeme as Jesus, being arrested while bound in modern handcuffs. Sean Borg plays the complex and conflicted Judas, while Sarah Mercieca portrays the unforgettable Mary Magdalene. They will be joined by a stellar supporting cast, including Raphael Pace as the fabulous King Herod, Joseph Zammit, Sean Kamati, Ryan Grech, Jake Curti, and Albert Buttigieg.

With Kris Spiteri as musical director, the unforgettable songs that have defined this rock-opera genre – including hits like 'Gethsemane', 'I Don’t Know How to Love Him', and 'Superstar' – will come to life on stage with high-energy choreography by Sandra Mifsud and Douglas Comley, and will undoubtedly have you singing on your way out of the theatre.
