It’s widely known that the Maltese Islands are brimming with history, with fantastic historic remains and artefacts everywhere you turn. For most, these unique remnants of times gone by are simply there to be appreciated at arm’s length, but what if I told you one such historic treasure was actually up for sale?

Well, it is, and that ancient gem is Torri Wejter in Birkirkara, also known as it-Torri tal-Mishun, in reference to its machicolations (known as galleriji tal-misħun in Maltese). Built in the 17th or 18th century by the Knights of the Order of Saint John, the tower was commissioned by Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful to watch over the inland areas in the surrounding region of Birkirkara. Yes – this is a legit piece of history, with its own Wikipedia page and everything.

Scheduled as a Grade 2 national monument by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in 2012, the privately-owned tower was partially demolished in the 1960s and later rebuilt, and is now on the market for one lucky (and erm, brave) owner to restore it to its former glory.

The listing describes the tower as having a square base, with a room on each of the three floors, with the entrance being through an arched doorway built in the medieval style. It goes on to suggest that it "can be used as a Bachelor's Pad having the entrance as living room, second floor as kitchen and third floor as bedroom", as well as offices or even a wine bar. Either way, it continues, it has "huge potential" - and we totally agree!

Reported to be in quite a dilapidated state, the new owner will have their work cut out to do right by this remarkable piece of national heritage, and we can’t wait to see Torri Wejter stand tall and proud once more!

Are you the person for the job? Your country needs you! (And then, how about a housewarming invitation? Just putting it out there…)
