In the hustle and bustle of Maltese summers, the Cleansing and Maintenance Division is diligently working to maintain cleanliness and public hygiene. Led by Director General Ramon Deguara and supported by the Ministry for Tourism and Public Cleanliness, the department has been addressing the pressing issue of illegal waste disposal and keeping the nation's beaches clean for the summer influx of visitors to Malta. Their initiatives, driven by a commitment to environmental stewardship and public health, highlight both the challenges and successes of keeping Malta clean.

Every day, workers from the Cleansing and Maintenance Division collect 45 tons of illegal waste, equivalent to the weight of two large double-decker buses. This volume of waste is also collected on days when waste collection is not scheduled, highlighting the severity of the problem. The department's efforts underscore a significant societal issue: irresponsible waste disposal by a portion of the population.

It is a well-known and distressing fact that many people in Malta are irresponsible in disposing of waste. The Cleansing and Maintenance Division emphasises that the responsibility for maintaining cleanliness should not fall solely on its workers and calls for a collective effort where individuals take responsibility for their actions and encourage others to do the same.

As heatwaves continue to grace us with their presence during these hot summer months, Malta's beaches are prime destinations for locals and tourists seeking a refreshing escape. To ensure these coastal areas remain inviting and safe, the Cleansing and Maintenance Division is meticulously taking care of beaches for the influx of visitors, reflecting their commitment to maintaining Malta's natural beauty.

The department has been working tirelessly to clean and maintain these vital recreational spaces. The efforts involve not only removing litter and debris but also addressing any environmental concerns that could affect the safety and enjoyment of beachgoers. By maintaining high standards of cleanliness, the CMD aims to enhance the visitor experience, thereby supporting the tourism sector, which is a crucial component of the island's economy.

While the Cleansing and Maintenance Division is at the forefront of these initiatives, the role of the community cannot be overstated. Effective waste management and environmental conservation require active participation from all citizens. The CMD’s call for personal and collective responsibility is a crucial aspect of fostering a culture of cleanliness.

Community involvement also extends to supporting the workers who perform these essential tasks. Acknowledging and appreciating their hard work can boost morale and reinforce the importance of their roles. Additionally, local businesses and organisations can collaborate with the Cleansing and Maintenance Division to promote environmental awareness and sponsor clean-up initiatives, further embedding the ethos of collective responsibility within the community.

Looking ahead, the Cleansing and Maintenance Division is poised to continue its vital work with renewed vigour. The department plans to expand its efforts, not only in waste collection and beach maintenance but also in broader environmental conservation projects. The CMD demonstrates the impact of dedicated public service in promoting a cleaner, healthier environment. Through their ongoing efforts against illegal dumping and their thorough preservation of beaches for the remaining summer months, they are setting a standard for cleanliness and community responsibility.
