As the world grapples with the escalating effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss, collective action has never been more critical. Earth Hour serves as a global reminder that small, united efforts can drive meaningful change.

More than just an annual event, Earth Hour is a powerful movement advocating for urgent action against environmental challenges. Organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), it unites millions of people worldwide in a symbolic act of turning off lights to raise awareness of climate change and sustainability.

Earth Hour 2025

In Malta, this event has become a key moment in the environmental calendar, with iconic landmarks and city skylines going dark to highlight the importance of reducing energy consumption and protecting natural resources.

In fact, on the 22nd of March 2025 from 6pm to 10pm in Valletta, Malta will once again participate in this initiative, demonstrating its commitment to a greener future. The Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleanliness (MEEC) is urging all citizens to take part in this global spectacle, emphasising that collective action is essential for a sustainable planet.

The event will feature various activities aimed at engaging the community and raising environmental awareness. From 6pm to 10pm, information stalls will provide educational materials on climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainability.

A live performance at 7pm by Emma and Leah will set the tone for the evening, followed by a performance by the Centre Stage Choir from 7.30pm to 8pm. During the same time, a marching band will parade from Triton Square through Republic Street, adding to the lively atmosphere.

At 8pm, scouts will gather at St. George’s Square for an interactive environmental activity. The highlight of the night, the symbolic switch-off, will take place from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, during which iconic buildings, including the President’s Palace, will go dark. A special feature will be projected onto the palace facade, accompanied by background music, while the public will come together to create and illuminate the Earth Hour 60 logo.

The night will conclude with a live performance by Kristia Suiak, ensuring a memorable and impactful experience for all participants.

Earth Hour 2025

The concept behind Earth Hour 2025

Earth Hour is not just about switching off lights for one hour; it is about inspiring action beyond the event. The initiative aims to encourage individuals to reduce their energy consumption by turning off non-essential lights. It also aims to educate the public about the effects of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss while also promoting long-term sustainable practices to decrease the overall carbon footprint of individuals and businesses.

Switch-off across Malta and Gozo

However, Earth Hour is not just happening in Valletta. Between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, landmarks and buildings across Malta and Gozo will participate in the global switch-off. These include monuments, government buildings, educational institutions, local councils, churches, and other public spaces, reinforcing the importance of conservation and sustainable energy use.

Numerous organisations and eco-conscious businesses are joining forces to make Earth Hour 2025 a success. Key participants include Saving Our Blue, Sustainable Development Directorate, Ambjent Malta, Project Green, Environment & Resources Authority (ERA), WasteServ, CE Malta, GHRC, Energy and Water Agency (EWA), Ziffa Maltija and Handmade Malta.

Earth Hour 2025 is a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the planet. By participating in this initiative, individuals, communities, and businesses can contribute to a collective effort to combat climate change and environmental destruction. As lights dim across Malta and Gozo, the message is clear: the time to act is now.

Join the movement on the 22nd of March and be a part of the change for a sustainable future!
