Birds of prey are an essential component of many ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature. Today, thanks to BirdLife Malta’s Facebook post, we’re shining the spotlight on apex predators, positioned at the top of the food chain.

These birds are known for preying on a range of animals such as insects, reptiles, rodents, and other birds. During the spring migration season, we are fortunate to witness an array of bird species, including some spectacular birds of prey.

Spring migration is a remarkable natural phenomenon that occurs when millions of birds across the globe travel great distances to breed in more favorable conditions.

This time of the year, many bird species pass through the Maltese Islands, and with them, we also get to see a variety of birds of prey. This is because the Maltese Islands are situated on one of the most important migratory routes, and as a result, we have the chance to witness some rare bird species.

One of the most common birds of prey seen during the spring migration is the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). These birds are relatively small, measuring approximately 33 cm in length and weighing around 180 grams. Common Kestrels are often seen hovering above fields, searching for prey. They prey on small mammals, birds, and insects and are a spectacular sight in the Maltese countryside.

A more elusive bird of prey that can also be spotted during the spring migration is the Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus). Marsh Harriers are medium-sized birds of prey, measuring approximately 50-60 cm long and weighing between 400 and 800 grams. They have a brown back and wings and are easily recognisable due to their long tail and distinctive flight style. They are often seen flying low over marshy areas and hunting small mammals and birds.

Birds of prey play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature, and protecting their habitats and conserving their populations is essential.
