This morning, several Maltese localities woke up to an unexpected hailstorm that left streets, rooftops and cars coated in ice.

Reports are still streaming in from different towns and villages, with some residents startled by the sudden onset of white hail together with abundant rainfall this morning.

Meteorologists had warned about isolated thundery showers and possible hail across the islands. Some of Malta’s central and southern localities were among the hardest hit.

If you looked outside this morning and saw your street glistening under small ice pellets, you weren’t imagining it. Hail can appear relatively quickly during a thundery shower - especially when conditions are just right for hail formation.
