This phenomenon takes place under very specific conditions.
If you were anywhere along the northern or western coast of Gozo earlier today, you may have spotted a strange cloud forming over the sea – it wasn’t just the heat getting to your head!
The Maltese Islands Weather page has explained that this was a case of sea fog, which forms when a warm and moist air mass from the south – which is at a toasty 31°C today – transfers over a cooler area of the sea, which is still at a relatively cool 22°C.
When this happens, the travelling air mass cools, and its temperature falls to the dew point. If the wind happens to be light, the air mass slides slowly over the cooler area of sea, increasing the chances of saturation and condensation. Interestingly, this happened in Gozo and not in Malta because of the significant difference in humidity between the two islands, with Malta at 55% and Gozo between 70% and a whopping 85%!
So if you caught a glimpse of this weather phenomenon today, you’ve had the chance to observe some very particular conditions working together to create some truly mystical vibes!
