Did you ever imagine porcelain could be 3D printed? Nico Conti’s solo exhibition opens this week in Valletta
Porcelain has long been associated with tradition of ancient civilisations, but what happens when modern technology meets this centuries-old craft? Maltese artist Nico Conti is pushing the boundaries of ceramics with his innovative use of 3D printing, and his latest works are intricate beauty defined.
Nico’s forms often reflect nostalgic memories of nature and religious architecture, echoing the heritage that shaped his upbringing. By combining humble clay with the precision of digital technology, he creates artworks that embody elegance and a contemporary sense of luxury.
Speaking about one of his newest pieces, Nico explained how it draws inspiration from classical Wedgwood forms: ‘This piece was created to rest on its side rather than stand upright. At a time when technology is often blamed for the decline of traditional craftsmanship, the work takes a slightly tongue-in-cheek approach, intentionally designed to appear as though it has collapsed.’
From 25 September to 23 October 2025, the Art Galleries at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta will host ‘Reflections on Porcelain’, Nico Conti’s solo exhibition. Spread across five conceptually distinct rooms, the exhibition explores porcelain not only as a material but as a metaphor: a medium for memory, narrative, and transformation.
Through his work, Conti challenges the perception of ceramics as merely decorative. Instead, he highlights their emotional and psychological depth, encouraging viewers to reflect on themes of fragility, care, and artistic vulnerability.
Make your way to the exhibition’s official opening on Thursday 25th September at 7pm, or pay a visit with free entrance after that – from Monday to Friday between 9am – 7pm, or Saturday 9am – 1pm.
