Heritage Malta
Heritage Malta has opened a new exhibition at MUŻA, Valletta’s National Community Art Museum, dedicated to the life and work of one of Malta’s most celebrated 20th-century artists, Aldo Micallef-Grimaud.
Marking 100 years since his birth, The Artistic Legacy of Aldo Micallef-Grimaud (1925–2010) will run until Sunday 28th September, offering visitors a unique chance to explore the artist’s remarkable journey.
From elegant portraits and striking depictions of Malta’s landscapes, to his bold shift from classical realism to more imaginative expression, Micallef-Grimaud’s work reflects both deep tradition and a constant drive for innovation. Among his most famous sitters were British Governor Sir Maurice Henry Dorman and Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi, while his monumental pieces continue to adorn churches and institutions across the islands.
One highlight of the exhibition is the 1995 work Arbre Enchanté, in which a tree transforms into a female figure – a powerful symbol of humanity’s unity with nature.

Curated by Prof. Louis Lagana, the exhibition also includes never-before-seen material from the artist’s personal archive, shared by his daughter Nadine Micallef-Grimaud. Together, they provide a personal portrait of an artist who honoured tradition while reimagining it for future generations.
The opening also saw the launch of a hardback publication, co-authored by Prof. Lagana and Nadine Micallef-Grimaud, and published by Heritage Malta. Richly illustrated, it dives deeper into the artist’s technical mastery and creative vision, serving as the perfect companion to the exhibition.
The Artistic Legacy of Aldo Micallef-Grimaud is open daily at MUŻA from 10am to 6pm, with free admission. Copies of the accompanying publication are available at MUŻA or online through Heritage Malta’s website.
