As Malta’s reputation in the international film world continues to grow, a seed of hope has been planted that 007 himself might soon be making a stylish return to the islands. In a recent Variety article titled ‘Why Malta Would Be a ‘Dream’ Location for the Next James Bond Movie’, journalist Pat Saperstein dives into the cinematic appeal of the Maltese Islands, and why the country may be perfectly poised to host the next instalment of the iconic spy franchise.
Malta has already made a cameo or two in Bond’s world: the archipelago featured briefly in two Roger Moore classics – ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ (1977) and ‘For Your Eyes Only’ (1981). But could the next film allow Malta to star as itself? That’s exactly what Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech hopes.
The Film Commissioner has expressed his desire for Denis Villeneuve – recently tipped to direct the next Bond film – to follow in the footsteps of directors like Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott, both of whom have worked in Malta.
Malta’s appeal lies in its unique mix of dramatic sea views, baroque architecture, and cultural heritage – making it a versatile set for any genre. This was most recently demonstrated by the Netflix production ‘Enola Holmes 3’, starring Millie Bobby Brown, which wrapped filming at Malta Film Studios just last month.
What made ‘Enola Holmes 3’ special is that the story itself is set in Valletta, so Malta didn’t have to double as another destination. One of the most memorable scenes includes a chase through the streets of Valletta during the ‘Day of the Gostra’, a feast celebrating St Julian. The production even worked with local puppet makers, continuing a family craft tradition to bring authentic Maltese artistry to the big screen.
‘Enola Holmes 3’ was just one of seven international productions shooting across Malta’s three islands in the first half of 2025 alone – a testament to Malta’s rapidly expanding film industry, which continues to attract major studios thanks to generous production incentives and experienced local crews.
From prehistoric temples to bustling harbours, Malta offers a cinematic landscape like no other. And with a little bit of luck – and perhaps a martini, shaken not stirred – James Bond might soon find himself right at home here.
Could Malta be 007’s next mission?
