Cinema City is back! Free open-air film screenings, including Maltese productions, in Valletta
These movie nights will be held at Gnien Laparelli from the 5th to the 10th of June.

Film fanatics, rejoice! Cinema City, the annual open-air film-screening event is back this year, from the 5th to the 10th of June. Once again, Gnien Laparelli in Valletta will be transformed into an open-air cinema in which viewers can enjoy iconic movies, including Maltese productions, under the stars.

Organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA), this year will be the third Cinema City edition and it is set to include a list of films depicting a variety of themes chosen by a set of volunteers with the aim to include different genres that would appeal to all audiences.

All films on all days will start at 9 pm and the screening will be free of charge. This year’s schedule is as follows:

  • 5th June – Inglorious Basterds (18)
  • 6th June – The Book of Life (U)
  • 7th June – Blood on the Crown (12A)
  • 8th June – Merjen (18)
  • 9th June – Sideways (16)
  • 10th June– Back to the Future (U)

Blood on the Crown is one of two movies on the list that falls under the ‘Maltese production’ category. Formerly titled Storbju and Just Noise, the film is a 2021 Maltese Canadian American film directed by Davide Ferrario based on the 1919’s Sette Giugno events. In fact, this film will be aptly shown on its public holiday.

Merjen is the second Maltese production film that tells the story of two childhood friends who grow up to become lovers. Motherhood is at its core theme while it also tells tales of domestic abuse and murder.

Free tickets can be collected from the Valletta Cultural Agency, Exchange Buildings, Republic Street in Valletta from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. Tickets are on a first come first served basis.
