For centuries, visitors to Valletta have stood before one of the world's greatest masterpieces – The Beheading of St John the Baptist, Caravaggio’s only signed painting and one of the treasures of St John's Co-Cathedral.

Today, there is a new way to discover the story behind this extraordinary work.

The Co-Cathedral’s award-winning Caravaggio Wing – Face-to-Face Experience has reimagined how audiences discover the artist, bringing together history, storytelling and technology to create one of Malta’s most immersive cultural experiences.

Designed to deepen visitors' understanding of Caravaggio's only signed masterpiece, the Caravaggio Wing guides audiences through the artist's dramatic time in Malta before revealing the extraordinary detail hidden within the painting itself. Through cinematic storytelling, large-scale projections and interactive digital displays, visitors are invited to explore Caravaggio's revolutionary techniques, his masterful use of light and shadow, and the symbolism woven throughout the work.

Rather than replacing the traditional museum experience, the technology has been carefully integrated to complement the Co-Cathedral's historic and sacred setting. The result is an experience that enhances the artwork without overshadowing it, allowing visitors to build a stronger emotional and intellectual connection with both the painting and the Co-Cathedral's remarkable heritage.

The journey begins with an introduction to the masterpiece before transporting visitors into Caravaggio's turbulent life in Malta through a cinematic presentation. Interactive displays then allow guests to examine the painting in remarkable detail, revealing elements that are often impossible to appreciate with the naked eye.

Visitors can also compare the work with other paintings by Caravaggio and his contemporaries, gaining fresh insight into the artist's unique style and lasting influence on European art.

Creating such an experience required close collaboration between curators, conservators, historians, researchers, digital designers and technical specialists. Every digital feature was developed with scholarly accuracy while ensuring that the technology remained intuitive and accessible for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

The experience is further enhanced by multilingual content and a dedicated audio guide, making the exhibition accessible to both local and international visitors.

The impact has been significant. Since the Caravaggio Wing opened, an estimated 95% of visitors to St John's Co-Cathedral have explored the immersive experience, with guests spending an average of 45 minutes discovering its digital features.

Educational programmes linked to the Wing also reach nearly 52,000 students each year, introducing younger generations to Caravaggio's artistic genius and Malta's rich cultural history in an engaging and memorable way.

The project's success has attracted international recognition, including a prestigious Museums + Heritage Award, reinforcing St John's Co-Cathedral's position as a leader in digital heritage interpretation. Increased repeat visitation and worldwide media attention have also demonstrated how thoughtfully applied technology can strengthen cultural tourism while preserving the authenticity of historic sites.

Co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund and The St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation, the Caravaggio Wing offers a compelling example of how heritage experiences can evolve for new generations. The exhibition also proves that centuries-old masterpieces can continue to inspire audiences in powerful and unforgettable ways.
