Christmas in the Capital! Valletta comes to life with festive spirit from 25th November
Valletta will be sparkling with holiday spirit this festive season as Christmas in the Capital returns! It kicks off on Monday 25th November, celebrating the festive lights illuminating Republic Street and the other main streets in the capital.
The Maltese musician Klinsmann Coleiro will open the festivities that day at 5.30 PM with a musical performance, following which, the city will be illuminated with over 600 metres of street lights along Republic Street, Merchants Street and South Street. Don’t miss the best bit – a stunning 21-metre-high Christmas tree will be erected in Freedom Square bringing festive wonder to anyone who happens upon it.
Ghaqda Madonna tal-Karmnu will be setting up a traditional Nativity crib next to St John’s Co-Cathedral, beautifully crafted to capture the spirit of Christmas and open for viewing from 25th November till 8th January.
Following its grand opening, Christmas in the Capital will bring the sights and sounds of Christmas to Valletta – from musicians and dancers to painters and circus acts will engage in spontaneous performances on the streets on 30th November and 1st December.
On the 7th and 8th of December, a Christmas Village will be bringing all sorts of handmade crafts and festive gifts to Merchants Street – the perfect place to pick up Christmas presents!
To bring some festive spirit to the little ones, the Valletta Design Cluster will host a children’s workshop on the 14th of December, where kids can create their own Christmas-themed slime creations to take home with them. On that same weekend, keep your eyes peeled for some Christmas mascots that will be roaming the capital and bringing Christmas cheer to everyone they meet.
A variety of musical performances will fill December, featuring talents like Chiara Siracusa, Franklin Calleja, Janvil and the Centrestage Choir. Highlights include the traditional Baby Jesus Procession on the 20th of December, where children carry a small statue of baby Jesus through the streets of Valletta, ending at the Nativity crib, accompanied by live choir music from *Cappella Musicale Caeciliana on the steps of St John’s Co-Cathedral.
Christmas in the Capital will culminate in the annual New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place at St George’s Square – an annual event in which the nation rings in the new year together!
