Yesterday, people from all across the world, Malta and Gozo included, marvelled at the beauty of the August supermoon.

The supermoon is more than simply a full moon. When a supermoon occurs, it means that the moon is at its closest point to Earth.  This makes it appear extremely bigger and brighter.

Some of Malta’s leading and most talented photographers took out their trusty camera to capture the magical moon against the remarkable Maltese skyline.

1. Daniel Cilia

This impressive photo shows the moon rising over the belfry of the chapel of St Anne at the Fort St Angelo in Birgu against the cross of the Knights of St John.

2. Anthony Grech

Anthony Grech’s amazing shot shows the supermoon against the Xaghra skyline backdrop as volunteers work hard to set up the church lights for this summer’s feats.

3. Darrin Zammit Lupi

This remarkable Reuters photograph taken by the Maltese photojournalist, Darrin Zammit Lupi depicts the supermoon lighting up the dome the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel together with St Paul's Anglican Pro-Cathedral in Valletta.

Another one of his photos was even shared to the American digital portal WIRED, which has over 3.5 million followers on Facebook alone.

4. Marika Caruana

The below photo was not taken on the night of the supermoon but on the eve of this magnificent phenomenon. Nonetheless, it still fully shows the allure of this beautiful moon.
