75% of fields that produce and harvest fruit or seeds for human consumption, highly depend on pollination that would not be possible without bees.
Unfortunately, during the last few years, there has been a worrying decrease of bees all across the globe. This is mainly due to the uncontrolled use of pesticide which has been leading to less pollination and therefore, less food production.
Our very existence depends on insect pollination, mainly that of bees.
Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese honey bee appealed that everyone has a part to play in helping bee population grow back to normal.
From the government to private companies, researchers, farmers and consumers everyone has to do better to prevent the decreasing bee population from become more of a danger that it already is.
Malta also had its own native bee, that is also highly important for Maltese eco-systems. It is currently even more under threat due to foreign bee species that are being imported to the country.
The native Maltese bees are mixing with the foreign imported bees resulting in the characteristics that make the Maltese bee different to get lost along the way.
So even though a bee might annoy you or cause you fear because it might sting you, remember our way of life is practically impossible without it!
