There’s a new Mosta eatery in town that goes by the name of CADE. CADE, located in Mosta, is the first establishment on the islands solely focused on Sri Lankan food.

This new restaurant promises to transport individuals with adventurous palates to the South Asian island by offering authentic Sri Lankan dining. Situated on San Pawl tal-Qliegha Street, on the outskirts of Mosta where the popular sports bar Extra Time used to reside, CADE is run by a couple, Carit Desira and her husband Mahendra, a Sri Lankan national.

Interviewed on WhosWho.mt, Carit Desira likes to tell their customers that CADE will take them to Sri Lanka and back in two hours!

After graduating from the Institute of Tourism Studies, Carit met her, now husband, while working in London. The couple moved back to Malta, but they found it difficult to settle in, which is why they moved to Sri Lanka.

However, in the wake of the pandemic, Sri Lanka’s economy collapsed. Being that the couple was pregnant with their second child, they decided that it was time to move back to Malta to make their culinary dreams a reality.

‘Sri Lankans cannot find such a wide range of their traditional dishes anywhere else,’ says Carit, ‘so it has become a place of belonging for the community.’

CADE is a family-oriented restaurant, and the establishment is also pet-friendly!

‘We want everyone to feel comfortable here. It’s not just about the food – service is just as important’.

After 10 months of opening, CADE has finally realised its new concept, revamped its menu and redecorated the restaurant using Sri Lankan traditional décor.

If you’ve never experienced Sri Lankan food, the new CADE menu features mildened curries to suit Maltese tastes, so even kids can enjoy it. Of course, if you like it spicy, then your wish will be this couple’s command!

And, if you’re wondering what CADE means, Carit reveals this information during this same interview!

‘It carries a double meaning. My first name is a combination of Carmen and Rita, for my grandparents, and CADE takes the first two letters of my first name and surname and combines them. But it is also the Sri Lankan pronunciation of the Sinhala letter in our logo, stylised like an elephant, and it means ‘shop’ in that language. So, whatever your language, you can recognise who and what we are.’

Will you be visiting CADE?
