Beat the heat! National plan launched across Malta to tackle extreme heat
Heatwave incoming!

Francesca Vella

As Malta moves into a week of scorching temperatures, the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting the public – particularly vulnerable individuals – from the risks associated with extreme heat.

The plan includes an early warning system, a nationwide awareness campaign, and dedicated daytime centres for those most at risk. These efforts are being implemented in collaboration with the Meteorological Office, healthcare entities, and national telecom providers.

Through this initiative, the public will receive real-time alerts via SMS when a period of extreme heat is forecasted. The messages will include practical advice on how to stay safe, such as staying hydrated, avoiding physical exertion during peak hours, and limiting direct sun exposure.

Thanks to the cooperation of local telecom companies, every mobile user in Malta and Gozo will receive these personalised messages when a heatwave is expected.

For individuals with specific medical conditions, the ministry has opened several Day Centres across the islands to offer a cool and safe space during peak heat hours. These centres are accessible via referral from the Primary Health Care Support Centre. Vulnerable individuals are also being contacted directly to ensure they’re aware of this service.

For more information about these centres, the public can call 2123 1231. In case of emergency, they are urged to call 1400 or 112.

A public information campaign has also been rolled out across multiple platforms. It offers simple tips to help residents and tourists alike stay safe in the heat. These include:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Avoiding physical activity during the hottest part of the day
  • Staying in shaded or air-conditioned spaces

How are you planning on staying cool this week?
