Artistic milestone! Maltese political cartoonist Seb Tanti Burlò opens his first UK solo exhibition in London
Bold colours and messages define the artist’s paintings

The name Sebastian Tanti Burlò may ring a bell from his political cartoons found in local newspapers, but the local artist is also an established writer and painter, and is now taking his talent overseas in his first UK solo exhibition at London’s Cicek Gallery, with the title ‘Antic Hay’.

The exhibition comprises 14 oil paintings the artist created between 2023 and 2024, featuring his hallmark caricatures. His piece ‘Bournemouth Bathers’, for instance, embodies Sebastian Tanti Burlò’s quirky way of portraying a particular greed in human nature, along with some comically recognisable elements of local characters.

Under the name Burlò, he has had his work exhibited locally as well as internationally in Barcelona, Florence and London. His work combines current affairs, satire and writing, creating a socio-commentary of today’s times in paintings with a message and colours that are equally bold.

His last solo show FROGA/FARRAGO was exhibited at R Gallery in Sliema over October and November last year, which presented the artist’s memories of Malta as he grew up alongside his observations of the country now.

Sebastian Tanti Burlò’s exhibition is currently open at Cicek Gallery until 31st August, from Wednesdays to Saturdays between 1-6pm so if you happen to be in London in the next week, go check it out!
