Approaching Freedom Day! The moment a monument to Malta’s independence arrived in Birgu
The monumental reminder of Malta's freedom

Francesca Vella

As you might know, this coming Monday 31st March, Malta celebrates Freedom Day, marking the moment in 1979 when the last British military forces departed the island. This historic milestone, which ended Malta’s role as a British military base, is commemorated by the Freedom Monument, a powerful symbol of sovereignty and national pride.

Designed by Maltese sculptor Antonio Agius, the Freedom Monument was carefully transported to its final location in Birgu, where it stands tall as a tribute to Malta’s journey toward full independence. While Malta had already achieved Independence in 1964 and became a Republic in 1974, the departure of British forces in 1979 was the final step in severing military ties with foreign powers.

This momentous occasion, championed by then Prime Minister Dom Mintoff, was a defining turning point in Malta’s modern political history. Today, the monument continues to serve as a reminder of Malta’s resilience, strength, and determination, and will be at the centre of the celebrations on Monday.

Have you ever spotted the massive monument on entering Birgu waterfront?
