Another astounding Maltese personality is being commemorated, and rightly so! On Wednesday 29th May, Heritage Malta invites the public to a lecture dedicated to renowned Maltese artist Emvin Cremona, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The artist’s family shall be present to share their memories, as the event seeks to present a more human side to the artist, his public and private life.

Who was Emvin Cremona?
Emvin Cremona was a remarkable Maltese artist who left a significant mark on the story of art on the local scene. He is regarded as one of the best local artists of the 20th century and is known for designing most Maltese stamps from 1957 to the 1970s, including a stamp issue commemorating Malta’s independence from British rule in 1964.
His works are found in several churches in Malta and Gozo, including the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gozo. Cremona’s creations can also be found in different parts of the world, with paintings being housed at The World Health Organisation headquarters in Geneva and the UN headquarters in New York. Now that’s something!

The prestigious medal of honour
Cremona is also responsible for designing the then Medal of Merit, handed out between 1968 and 1971, which was later replaced by the Gieh ir-Repubblika, which is a medal of honour that offers membership to those who have demonstrated exceptional merit in the service of Malta or of humanity. Its motto is Ghall-Gid tal-Maltin (For the Good of the Maltese).
