Adorable surprise! Hedgehog Anglu rescued from outside St Angela Kindergarten in Pieta
Yesterday afternoon, an unexpected visitor made his way to St Angela Kindergarten in Pietà – a tiny hedgehog seeking shelter under a parked van. Sister Michela, one of the school’s nuns, quickly contacted Xrobb L-Ghagin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehab Centre for help.
When a volunteer from the centre arrived, they found the hedgehog well cared for by the school staff. One particularly kind-hearted teacher had even gone out to buy cat food, which the little creature happily devoured. After confirming he was a male, the nuns, teachers, and students named him ‘Anglu’ – a fitting name meaning ‘angel’ in Maltese.
The rescue turned into a learning opportunity for the students. Alongside the volunteer, the teachers introduced the children to Anglu, explaining more about hedgehogs and how to safely help one in need. The timing of his rescue was crucial – roadworks were taking place nearby, and without intervention, Anglu could have been in serious danger.
A huge well done goes out to Sister Michela, Sister Rosette, and the entire staff for their kindness and quick action in protecting this little creature. Hedgehogs, along with many other wildlife species in Malta, are legally protected.
