A wholesome meeting by the sea! Turnstone & Grey Plover spotted along the Maltese coast
Take a look at nature bringing some unlikely friends together.
Nature lovers, birdwatchers, and coastal wanderers – here’s an uplifting encounter if you need a day-brightener! Two feathered visitors, the Turnstone (known in Maltese as Monakella Imperjali) and the Grey Plover (Pluviera Griża), were recently spotted side-by-side along Malta’s scenic shoreline.
The wholesome moment was captured by talented local nature photographer Benny Scerri, who managed to freeze in time a rare and peaceful encounter between these two migratory birds. His photos show the birds comfortably sharing the same stretch of coast – a beautiful reminder of the biodiversity that quietly graces our islands, especially during migratory seasons.
The Turnstone, with its bold markings and busy, darting movements, is a regular migrant visitor that can often be seen flipping over stones in search of food (hence the name). Meanwhile, the Grey Plover, more reserved and slightly larger, stands out with its silvery plumage and distinctive black belly during breeding season, though it appears more muted while wintering.
Kudos to Benny for sharing this slice of serenity with the rest of us!
