A powerful reminder about marine waste! Kayakers rescue injured turtle Donatella near Ġnejna
What began as a peaceful paddle near Ġnejna Bay earlier this week quickly turned into a rescue mission for a local kayaking group – and a wake-up call for all of us about the impact of marine pollution.
In a post shared to social media, the group introduced the world to their unexpected companion, the turtle they named Donatella.
While returning from a kayaking trip, the group spotted a turtle floating oddly near the surface. Concerned, they approached gently and watched as the turtle attempted a weak dive into the shallow water, clearly in distress.
One of the kayakers, Sean, entered the still-chilly waters (currently at just 17°C!) to carefully retrieve her. Upon closer inspection, the cause of her suffering became clear – a fishing line was protruding from her back end, likely from something she had ingested.
‘It was heartbreaking,’ the group shared. ‘She couldn’t swim away properly, and we knew she needed help fast.’
The kayakers quickly contacted the Nature Trust Malta rescue line on 9999 9505, and within minutes, a dedicated official, Angelique, arrived at the scene. Donatella was taken to the Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where she is now receiving the care she needs.
While her recovery remains uncertain, the group expressed hope to visit her soon and see her return one day to the wild sea she calls home.
‘This experience is a fresh reminder to all of us: be mindful of your waste,’ they wrote. ‘And if you can, pick up a piece or two of plastic when you're out by the sea. It really can make a difference.’
This touching rescue story is not just about one turtle — it’s a call to action for everyone who enjoys Malta’s stunning coastline. Every effort, no matter how small, can help protect the marine life that shares these waters with us.
Wishing Donatella a smooth and speedy recovery!
