A more sustainable tomorrow: An evening of fun, learning, and connection at Lejla Sajfija fil-Park
At its core, Lejla Sajfija fil-Park was about making sustainability relatable.
The fourth edition of Lejla Sajfija fil-Park made its comeback on Friday 1st August at San Klement Park in Ħaż-Żabbar, drawing families, children, and individuals of all ages for an evening filled with fun, learning and a deeper connection with sustainability.
Organised by the Sustainable Development Directorate, this community event once again showcased how sustainability, education, and recreation can come together to inspire meaningful change.

Set against the backdrop of the park’s greenery, the event opened with a vibrant performance by the Żabbar Scouts Group, setting the tone for an evening that was both energetic and purposeful. Throughout the park, music brought an upbeat atmosphere as families enjoyed a variety of activities under the summer sky.
Children were at the heart of the celebration, engaging in games, crafts, and sports demonstrations designed to be both entertaining and educational. These hands-on experiences were aimed at fostering early awareness about environmental, social and economic responsibility.

A key feature of this event is the strong presence of local and national organisations hosting interactive stands that blended information with fun. Sports associations such as the Malta Football Association, Hibernians Basketball Club, University of Malta’s Wolves Football Rugby Club, and the Malta Paralympic Committee promoted active lifestyles through games and demonstrations, motivating children and adults alike to stay physically active.
Health and wellness also took centre stage with the Malta Medical Students’ Association offering advice on nutrition and balanced diets as well as health checks while Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department staff delivered CPR demonstrations to increase public awareness of emergency preparedness and general well-being.

The event also provided an excellent platform for various youth and community services. Representatives from FSWS ACTS, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, KNŻ and the SDG Youth Champions were present to interact with young people, sharing information on services and initiatives aimed at empowering youth and supporting families.
In addition, security and enforcement agencies like the Armed Forces of Malta, Malta Police Force, and the Civil Protection Department drew attention with exhibitions and interactive displays, allowing the public to learn more about their operations in a family-friendly environment.
Servizzi Ewropej Malta helped citizens understand how EU-funded initiatives are improving quality of life in Malta while Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit took things beneath the surface (literally!) with a virtual reality experience that allowed visitors to explore Malta’s submerged archaeological treasures.

At its core, Lejla Sajfija fil-Park was about making sustainability relatable and educating the public on all three pillars that make up sustainable development. Environmental organisations including WasteServ, Project Green, the Energy and Water Agency, Ambjent Malta, Circular Economy Malta, the Environment and Resources Authority, and Saving our Blue provided practical guidance on how small, daily choices, like reducing waste and conserving water, can collectively make a significant impact.
Rounding off the evening were live experiments and engaging storytelling by Esplora, Malta’s national science centre, which sparked curiosity and made science both fun and accessible to all.
Lejla Sajfija fil-Park proved that environmental awareness can go hand in hand with community celebration, offering a space where education, culture and entertainment can come together to plant seeds for a more sustainable future.
