A glimpse into 1930s Malta! Photo captures the charm of the Maltese town of Rabat
The Malta of 90 years ago!

Emma Galea

A photo shared by the National Archives of Malta shows the charming town of Rabat during the first half of the 20th century.

Taken in either, 1938 or 1939 the shot depicts Maltese women walking along Hospital Street, Rabat in the traditional ghonella as Malta’s traditional balconies are spotted in the background.

You can even spot children playing and goats running around in this picturesque shot.

It might have been taken during festa season as two statues sitting on a festive pedestal, one on the left and another on the right, can be seen in the photo.

The photo is the work of the late Harold Fredrick Rodgers, a member of the Royal Air Force who was stationed in Malta during the time. His photos were donated to the National Archives by his daughter, Carol Dorman.
