The Name Behind The Magic

Onella

If you're a fellow local like me, you might be thinking, "but that's not how you spell għonnella!" And you're absolutely right! However, can you imagine foreign visitors trying to pronounce the word? So, to share this intriguing icon of local folklore with tourists, a simplified variation was conceived and Onella was born.

The għonnella is a traditional Maltese garment worn by women regularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, as fashion and societal norms evolved, the usage of the għonnella declined, and it is now primarily seen as a symbol of local folklore or worn for traditional events and ceremonies.

The name Onella is a fitting nod to the past blended with a contemporary interpretation and an appreciation of global influences – all reflected in this delightful wine bar’s offering.

Setting the Stage

This attractive wine bar has a distinct bistro allure, where wine evidently takes centre stage. Its extraordinary wine menu features not only premium selections, but also excellent labels for all budgets, including the elusive orange wine, which is pretty tough to find in local establishments.

Choose to indulge in the intimacy of the cosy downstairs seating area, or upstairs for a livelier gathering. You can expect impeccable craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, that’s evident in the tasteful design and outstanding service that permeates the venue.

Inside this beautifully renovated old townhouse, Onella pays homage to local culture every step of the way. Maltese tiles grace the floors, whispering heritage-filled stories, while the iron stair railings guide your ascent to the upper floor and the smooth limestone carries the weight of history. The walls, sturdy and proud, radiate warmth and authenticity. And as your eyes wander, they are greeted by striking emerald-green accents, adding a touch of sophistication to the rustic charm.

200 Wines – Need We Say More?

Onella knows that a great culinary experience is incomplete without good wine. With a wine list spanning Malta, Bordeaux, Italy, Lebanon, Chile, and beyond, there's a perfect bottle for every palate and budget. And if wine isn't your thing, there’s no need to worry! Onella also serves up a killer selection of cocktails, beers, ciders, and non-alcoholic drinks to suit all tastes.

Now, Let’s Dish on the Menu

Onella

During our visit, we were treated to the chef's surprise tasting menu, featuring five exquisite courses, accompanied by a refreshing white Riesling from France. The menu celebrates the pleasures of sharing good food, company, and conversation; from delicate nibbles to indulgent pasta, mains, and desserts, it offers a delightful range of dishes. What sets it apart is its dynamic nature, inspired by the seasons and the chef's creativity. The menu even caters to different dietary preferences, including vegetarian and gluten-free options, while also offering a tempting selection of top-quality cold cuts and cheeses.

The chef's extraordinary interpretation of Maltese cuisine was impressive, showcasing culinary prowess through dishes like rabbit spring rolls and bite-sized imqaret. However, it was the Duck & Foie Gras Terrine that stole the spotlight, paired with a velvety orange marmalade gel and perfectly toasted focaccia. With its remarkable richness and buttery texture, this culinary masterpiece surpassed expectations, just like the delightful fenkata-in-a-spring roll that followed.

Next up: the Tomatoes & Charred Octopus Risotto, a creamy treat that would delight any seafood aficionado out there. As if that weren't enough, the chef continued to tickle our taste buds with the succulent Uruguay New York Striploin, flawlessly accompanied by an egg fried puree, delectable confit egg, and red wine onions. And just when we thought our taste buds couldn't handle any more bliss, the chef presented us with the grand finale – mini imqaret to leave us with a lingering sweet note.

Having indulged in a truly remarkable experience, our departure left us with an insatiable craving for more. Every detail and dish showcased meticulous thought and consideration, evident in the selection of decanters, extensive wine list, enchanting ambiance, and the ever-evolving menu. For those seeking a cutting-edge feast for the senses, this wine bar is an absolute must.
