A new pizza in Għaxaq is turning heads (and raising eyebrows) across Malta. ‘L-Ikla t-Tajba’, the eatery that opened its doors last year, has launched what may be one of the most talked-about dishes on the local food scene: the Bebbuxu Pizza, topped with – yes – snails.
The somewhat daring creation features premium locally farmed Nocciola snails, supplied by Bebbux ta’ Malta, who proudly shared the collaboration on their Facebook page. Built on a crispy pizza base, the dish is topped with a secret-recipe snail stew made using Maltese snails, and finished with aged Pecorino cheese.
Described by the restaurant as a ‘one-of-a-kind pizza like no other’ (we don’t doubt it), the dish has already sparked some discussion online. Some curious commenters wondered how one is meant to tackle a pizza covered in snail shells, but L-Ikla t-Tajba clarified that the shells are purely decorative. The snail meat itself is incorporated into the stew topping the pizza.
Would you dare give it a try?
