80-year-old photo from 1943 shows King George VI visiting Malta during World War II
The Maltese people welcomed him with open arms.

A photo shared to Pinterest by Lea Francis Ellis' shows the one and only King George VI walking through the streets of Malta in June 1943 after the country was severely suffering the repercussion of World War II.

He is seen walking through Senglea with the town’s Archpriest, Canon Emmanuel Brincat as he is surrounded by many people.

Malta was still recovering from the countless air raids that hit the country and made it the most bombed country in all of World War II.

King George was visiting the Allies in North Africa but on his way back he insisted on stopping by Malta first.

His unexpected visit might have come as a surprise to Malta but it was welcomed with extreme delight as many flocked the streets and the harbour to see His Majesty.

It was extremely dangerous for him to stop over in Malta as enemy ships were still very much nearby, yet he insisted.

An important day in Malta's history!
