7 frustrating things Maltese drivers do
Guaranteed to drive you insane!

Jillian Mallia

If you’re a driver on Maltese roads, you’ll probably 100 per cent relate to this. If you’re a newbie trying to manoeuvre through the island's crazy streets, well… good luck. Here are seven of the most frustrating things that Maltese drivers do, with handy GIFs.

1. Those damn brights

Some drivers automatically think that night time means bright lights! We’re not on Broadway, kids. No need to blind my already-bad-enough eyes!

2. Speeding between lanes

Our roads aren’t a Need for Speed game, and for everyone’s safety, just drive like a sane person in ONE lane.

3. Indicators? What are they?

*Lord, give me strength* These little blinkers are just ornaments in this country. Turning left into a side road? Oh, no need to be indicate. Turning right, round a roundabout? It's fine! It’s just an optional decoration!

4. Parking in the middle of the road

And the award for the most inconsiderate driver goes to…! Parking in the middle of the road isn’t surprising in Malta. Comments like “Kera it-triq, ħej!” (he rented out the road!) will surely surface in this frustrating situation.

5. Driving slowly on the fast lane

A crash course in road rules: there is a left lane for a reason – to drive, the right lane is for overtaking. Snails move faster than these people, sometimes.

6. To give way or not to give way

Stop signs, give ways – kollha xorta! No one comes to a dead stop here in Malta, we just edge out or whizz past the junction, there’s no way we’re going to stop – we’re busy people! We’ve got places to go, and people to see! We wouldn’t know what a stop sign is if it hit us in the head.

7. We have a Masters in honking

The loudest population in the Mediterranean are also experts at honking! A person is driving too slowly? HONK! A person comes out onto a main road without warning? HONK!

Are there any other frustrating things Maltese drivers do that drive you up the wall? Let us know in the comments below!
