6 things to do to celebrate the start of summer in Malta
It's officially summer... and there's so much to do!

Lisa Borain

Dine al fresco

The initiation of summer is always met with a mass exodus of Maltese coming out of their homes to enjoy al fresco dining. Whether it's a barbecue or eating out, people want to sit outside to enjoy the sunshine at lunch time, or dine amongst romantic, twinkling lights during long summer nights.

Get to the beach!

Summer is all about the beach - physically, socially and mentally. It's time for that much needed vitamin D and sea water to bring on a healthy glow. There are a multitude of beach clubs and spots to choose from according to lifestyle and taste, whether you're single or with a big family in tow!

Visit a festa

Festa time is now well under way. It's time for kiosk food, fireworks, loud marching bands, and statue carrying. The loud daytime firework bangs are a sure sign that summer has arrived.

Grab a drink by the sea

The Maltese don't need an excuse to grab a drink... or sit by the sea. Summer brings on the urge to be outside all the time and days are long, which means after-work drinks are a given.

Experience a cultural event

A multitude of fantastic open-air venues bring on frequent yearly cultural events. Look out for big events such as The Malta International Arts Festival (June 29th-July 16th), The Mellieha Outdoor Arts Festival (July 6th), The Malta International Food Festival in Mdina (July 19th-22nd), The Marsovin Summer Wine Festival (July 20th-22nd), and the 14th edition of the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival on July 27th-29th, to name a few.

Attend an open-air musical concert

Apart from a multitude of cultural events, music has its own place in summer. For starters, the open-air Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta comes to life. This year, June 23rd kicks off the season with Havasi in Concert. The Isle of MTV Malta Music Week takes place from June 27th-July 1st, and don't miss the The Malta International Jazz Festival in Valletta on July 16th-21st. Malta is lucky to have the world-renowned tenor Joseph Calleja as a Maltese national, and this summer sees him singing with guest star Eros Ramazzotti on July 21st at The Granaries in Floriana. On July 28th, Tomorrowland will be connected live with seven other locations across the globe, including Malta.
