5 things locals do in September in Malta
It’s all about chasing the sunshine.

September is a wild card. For some it’s easy, and for others it’s the run up to a full winter calendar at the office and at home. Many locals try to get away from the stress of life; either by enjoying a well deserved break after the summer rush or resting up for the storm ahead. Here are five ways we locals like to chill in September.

Visit Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk is spectacular at this time of year. The colours, the people, the produce - ahh, divine. Pay the fishing market a visit if you’re looking to score some killer eats, or alternatively, pick a restaurant on the promenade and treat your taste buds right. Don’t forget to pack your camera on this visit, the quirks here need to be captured with something more than a smartphone.

Hit one last summer festa

The festa… Malta’s top street party that hits each and every village. The main attraction? It’s hard to pin it on just one feature - the fireworks are beautiful, the food is fun, the crowds are vibrant. Drag your friends to one last festa before the season’s over… at the very least, do it for the doughnuts.

Get your trekking boots back on

The weather’s finally not as brutal as it was in July or August, and your trusty old friends, the trekking boots, can find their rightful home once more. Slip those bad boys back onto your feet, give yourself a good stretch and head to your favourite adventure spot. Do pack your swimming gear as the end of the road will most definitely end with a dip in the cool sea.

Re-visit the capital

September is the perfect time to head to Valletta. The swarms of tourists begin to diminish and the locals are scarcer too, but the beauty is definitely there. Head for the narrow streets and look up to spot all the niches, balconies and beautiful corbels that embellish our splendid capital. Check out the top sites, pop into a church or two and grab a bite to eat and hey presto - you’ve got yourself a perfect day in the city.

Enjoy the public holidays

There are two public holidays in September. The first is on the 8th and celebrates Malta’s victory over the Turks way back in 1565 (although sadly, this year fell on a Saturday), but we've still got the second one to look forward to: Independence Day is celebrated on the 21st of the month.

The weather may be starting to play up but that doesn’t mean you can’t have bundles of fun in the sun. Spice it up a little this September and try something new!
