The Department of Malta recently entertained history lovers and locals alike with a throwback photo from the 1960s, showcasing roadworks underway in front of a striking church.

The post invited followers to guess the location - and the community didn’t disappoint. Commenters quickly identified the church as the Qrendi Parish Church, a central and much-loved landmark in the southern village of Qrendi.

The image captures a moment in time when Malta when dust was rising from the unpaved road, while workers marked a contrast against the timeless baroque façade of the church. The scene is a reminder of the country’s evolving landscape and how modernisation often unfolded side by side with Malta’s deeply rooted heritage.

The Qrendi Parish Church, officially dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, is an iconic structure that has stood as a spiritual and social centre for the local community since its completion in the late 17th century. Its architectural beauty, with twin bell towers and ornate detailing, remains a symbol of village pride.

Did you recognise Qrendi’s parish church in the photo?
