10 Maltese women in sport who are kicking some serious butt
They make setting national records seem easy!

1. Rachel Cuschieri

26-year old footballer Rachel Cuschieri climbed the ranks within the local women’s football scene, playing in the Birkirkara Football Club’s first team within months of joining at the age of 13. She was soon chosen to form part of Malta’s women’s national football team, and today is making her own success story playing with Dutch side PSV Vrouwen.

2. Elena Borg

Water polo player Elena Borg began her sporting career training with men, until her Malta team, Exiles, opened up a women’s team, which she eventually became captain of. This water polo champ has achieved great success locally – including winning the BOV Water Polo Women’s League Champions last year – and overseas too, as she now plays with Italian A1 Series team CSS Verona.

3. Yazmin Zammit Stevens 

Malta’s most prolific female weight lifter is on a serious road to stardom. Yazmin Zammit Stevens has broken one personal and national record after another in weight lifting, and really cemented her status when she won Malta’s Sportswoman of the Year in 2018 at the Sport Malta awards. She’s already been nominated as a finalist in the People's Choice Award and the Sportswoman of the Year award for 2019, while keeping her eyes firmly on her next goal: to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

4. Amy Micallef

There’s no stopping talented national swimmer Amy Micallef. Just weeks ago, she achieved a new national record, beating her own previous record in the process, when she swam the 200m breaststroke in 02:39 25 while competing in the Zurich HiPoint Meet in March.

5. Francesca Curmi

This young tennis star made a record-breaking debut as the first Maltese player to make it to top tennis tournaments Rolland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open, and even made it to the semi-finals at the Australian Open this year, making her one of the top international junior players in Malta and beyond our shores.

6. Elaine Genovese

Maltese tennis powerhouse Elaine Genovese has clinched many titles and achievements throughout her tennis career this far. Last July, Elaine, together with Francesca Curmi, made history when the team reached the play-offs of the Fed Cup in Montenegro, considered the World Cup of tennis. The duo went on to reach the finals, and placed second overall, after winning their tough group without dropping a set.

7. Charlotte Wingfield

Maltese-British athlete, Charlotte Wingfield has two national records to her name: the 100m outdoor sprint in 11.54 seconds, and the 200m sprint in 23.78 seconds, both of which she set in 2017. Charlotte also won gold for Malta at the Small Nations Games at San Marino in 2017. She left the Games with two gold medals (for the 100m and 200m races), and one silver for the 4x100m relay race.

8. Ella Borg 

Young gymnast Ella Borg is on an upward trajectory to success. In 2018, she won gold on Vault, silver on Beam and bronze on Floor categories at the Comité d’Organisation des Jeux des Iles (COJI) in Sicily, and placed 1st on Vault, 2nd on Floor, 3rd on Beam and 3rd Overall at the 2018 Gymstars International Competition. Topping her success last year was the People’s Choice Award she won at the Sports Malta Awards 2018.

9. Leah Tanti 

Maltese national swimmer Leah Tanti established a new Group D (ages 15 and 16) record in the 100m Breaststroke Heat at the Swedish Grand Prix Swimming Competition in Malmo last January, first with a time of 01:15,43, which she went on to smash in the finals when she improved her time to a record 1:15,33. Leah holds another two national records in her group, for the 50m and 200m breaststroke.

10. Hannah Pace 

National Triathlon champion Hannah Pace has held her position as Malta’s top female triathlete for three successive years, and added new accolades to her list in 2018, among them when she won the women’s 25-29 age group category, and placed third overall in the Overall Amateur Ranking at Ironman 70.3 in Staffordshire.
