The Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) is a vibrant dragonfly species commonly found near water bodies across Malta.

Known for its striking red colouration, this dragonfly adds colour to the natural landscape. One of the best places to observe these beautiful insects is at the Argotti Botanic Gardens, where the fountains serve as a popular gathering spot for them.

Visitors to the gardens can often spot Scarlet Darters darting gracefully through the air, engaging in rapid aerial displays as they chase one another or search for food. When they are not in flight, these dragonflies can be seen resting on the edges of the fountains, basking in the sun or surveying their surroundings.

The presence of Scarlet Darters at Argotti Botanic Gardens highlights the importance of such natural spaces in supporting local biodiversity. These dragonflies not only contribute to the visual appeal of the gardens but also play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance by preying on smaller insects.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll through the gardens, spotting a Scarlet Darter is a delightful experience, showcasing the vibrant life that thrives around Malta’s water bodies.

Have you ever seen a Scarlet Darter in action?
