Malta experienced an uncharacteristically warm January in 2025, with temperatures resembling those typically seen in spring.
According to popular Facebook page, Maltese Islands Weather, data from a weather station in Kercem, Gozo, revealed that the mean maximum temperature for the month stood at 17.5°C, which is 1.9°C above the average. The mean temperature was recorded at 14.6°C, 1.8°C higher than usual, while the mean minimum temperature dipped slightly to 11.7°C, 1.6°C below the norm.
The highest temperature of the month reached 19.5°C on the 26th of January, reinforcing the feeling of an early spring across the islands. Meanwhile, the coldest night was recorded on the 16th of January, when temperatures dropped to 5.6°C.
Despite the warmer weather, rainfall remained below average. The total precipitation recorded in Kercem for January was 52.8 mm - 16.6 mm less than usual. The national mean rainfall for the month was 63.0 mm, contributing to an overall rainfall deficit since the 1st of September, which now stands at 116.2 mm below the seasonal norm.

Rainfall amounts varied across the Maltese Islands, with Dingli recording the highest total at 101.1 mm, while Marsaxlokk registered the lowest at 47.4 mm. In Gozo, Ghajnsielem received the most precipitation at 67.5 mm, while Marsalforn had 51.5 mm.
The combination of higher temperatures and reduced rainfall continues a trend of warm weather patterns in Malta.
