Wied Speranza reborn! Major environmental restoration breathes new life into Malta’s valley
This comprehensive rehabilitation ensures that Wied Speranza is now not only a safer and more sustainable natural space.
Wied Speranza, one of Malta’s most cherished natural valleys, has been fully restored following an extensive environmental rehabilitation project.
This project has brought this treasured natural valley to life. It reflects the commitment to restoring natural spaces for public enjoyment and reconnecting communities with the environment in the aim of giving these valleys back to the people while creating greener spaces for everyone.

The work carried out in Wied Speranza demonstrates how European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development resources can be effectively invested in environmental protection and community wellbeing. Projects like this safeguard our valleys, strengthen biodiversity, and create spaces that people can enjoy safely and respectfully.
The restoration programme at Wied Speranza included the removal of invasive plant species, cleaning of the valley bed, and the planting of 300 native trees and shrubs to encourage the return of local wildlife. A new 1.4km irrigation system has been installed to support the growth of the newly planted vegetation.

In addition, traditional rubble walls, an important element of Malta’s rural heritage, have been repaired and rebuilt, with 1.4km of walls restored to prevent soil erosion and stabilise the valley slopes. Barriers were installed to prevent off-roading, while biodegradable materials were used to secure the soil. Plans for new information signage will also allow visitors to learn more about the valley’s natural and historical heritage.
This comprehensive rehabilitation ensures that Wied Speranza is now not only a safer and more sustainable natural space but also a revitalised area where communities can enjoy and connect with Malta’s rich environmental heritage.
