He’s a favourite candidate, and here's why.
As President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca’s term is coming to a close this April, speculations as to who will be the next President of Malta are circling. And as has been reported, it seems we have a favourite! Dr George W. Vella is among the candidates for the presidency, and is likely to be appointed. Is that the first time you've heard his name? Here’s all you need to know about him, and why we think he'll make a fine President for our lovely little rock in the Med.

Who is George Vella?
Dr George Vella is the former Labour Party Foreign Minister and served under two Prime Ministers: Alfred Sant from 1996 to 1998 and Joseph Muscat from 2013 to 2017. A family man, George Vella was specialised in family medicine, having graduated as a medical doctor in 1964.
This year, he had the privilege of being bestowed with the Insignia of Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George by HRH The Duke of Kent on behalf Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Talk about a shiny medal!
With speculations on the rise, it seems we are very close to finding out who our next President will be. Will it be Dr George Vella?
3 reasons we’re rooting for him
1. He’s compassionate: being a grandfather to seven grandchildren, he’s a beloved, kind nannu that everyone loves and will be sure to help the Maltese citizens.
2. He’s a thinker: graduating in medicine and being involved in politics for a good number of years, Dr Vella will definitely listen to the concerns of the locals and address them at his time in office.
3. He has international experience: Dr Vella served as Malta’s permanent representative at the Council of Europe, building strong connections with international leaders.

If appointed, Dr George Vella, now 77, will be the oldest person ever to take the office of the President. Previously, former President Censu Tabone (76) was the oldest person to take the position of Head of State back in 1974.
