Our small islands have received more and more attention over the years and, as a result, more people flock here. But, there are always a handful of foreigners who have absolutely no clue where we are and what we and our beautiful island are like. Here are 10 of the most common phrases every Maltese person has heard when sharing their nationality with expats.
1. Where?
This is probably the most common question. Most people don’t know about us and they just pull a confused face.
2. Oh, like the state in the US!
Not quite, but sure – we’ve got the same name (we’re pretty sure ours came first).
3. Ah, like the chocolate!
Another common one that we’ve totally taken credit for. At this point, we’ve created the delish Maltesers and we’re just like them – a mix of crunchy and gooey depending on the sitch.
4. Are you like, Italian?
Yes, we’re close to Italy and, yes, we’ve got words from their language, but we’re an entirely different country, bro. And don’t try to tell us otherwise.
5. The Game of Thrones location!
Ever since the first season of Game of Thrones was filmed on the rock, people instantly know about us and flock to the islands. We guess it was a good move!
6. Is it where Malt comes from?
The drink? Nah, bro. But we’ve got something much better – Cisk!
7. Geez, y’all are tiny!
Yes, we know and we have established that we’re a tiny ass island in the middle of the Med. No need to rub it in.
8. Your English is really good!
“Why thank you! Better than yours probs!” we’d say with a sarcastic smile, because now it’s just getting insulting.
9. You must really like fish
I mean, yes we do, but we literally eating EVERYTHING. We’re big food lovers and, while fish is a staple food on our islands, we’ve got much more to offer. Pastizzi, timpana and juicy steaks for one!
10. You sound like you’re angry and fighting all the time
We’re a passionate bunch and we kinda do look like we’re fighting with whoever we’re talking to. But that’s because we want to get our point across!
