There's a lot you can do on a single day trip to the south of Malta, assuming you have a car and can get around easily. The distances are short and the island is rich with attractions. Take a packed lunch to enjoy more time sightseeing, and then reward yourself with dinner in style. If you’re taking a bus, I recommend a hop-on-hop-off service that takes you directly to the places of interest - then make your own itinerary from the below.

Go to the morning market at Marsaxlokk

On a weekday, the market is small, but on Sundays, prepare yourself for a huge market sprawling all along the promenade. Get there early to allow yourself to have a good look while leaving time for more to do that morning.

Have a swim at Peter’s Pool or Kalanka Bay

Easier if you’re driving, these rocky beaches are among the most beautiful in the Maltese Islands. Practice your diving in clear azure waters and make sure you have your snorkelling gear.

Visit Ghar Dalam in Birzebbuga

Carved by torrents of water, the cave contains 500,000-year-old fossils and evidence of early settlers 7,400 years ago. See hippopotami and the dwarf-elephant in the museum.

Get a boat trip to the Blue Grotto

In the gorgeous Wied iz-Zurrieq, a little creek with boats is the departure point for a trip to several caves. See your hands turn a spectral blue when placed in the water at the Blue Grotto.

Visit Mnajdra & Hagar Qim Temples

Man-made structures around 5,500 years old await you at two magnificent Megalithic sites that have been classed UNESCO World Heritage sites. Mnajdra and Hagar Qim are best known for their astronomical alignments with the sun and moon during the equinox and solstice.

Snorkel at Ghar Lapsi

The pretty Ghar Lapsi bay is a large pool protected from the open sea. Snorkelling here is pure delight, and the cave and surroundings just as picturesque.

Go Back to Wied iz-Zurrieq for dinner al fresco

Drive back 6 km to Wied iz-Zurrieq to enjoy dinner al fresco in the lovely environment of this enchanting spot. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, and they often serve a fresh catch.

Enjoy a varied day with these highlights, so that in just a day trip to the south of Malta, you don’t miss a thing!
