You won’t be bored this week with these ideas!

Rebecca Anastasi

Start your week with something different:

Tuesday 10th April: 7pm – 11pm: Chess Society – Café Society, Valletta & Tuesday 10th April: 7pm – 9pm: Notions, Nostalgia and Nonsense – Teatru Salesjan, Sliema.

If you’re tired of the same-old, same-old, you’re in luck this week! Café Society – the hangout spot of the coolest kids in town – are organising a chess game, open to all levels. You’ll be playing against members of the Chess Society though, so you better hone your skills! Be sure to book. Across the bay, in Sliema, head to the Salesian Theatre for a dramatised grand soirée celebrating Maltese poetry. Notions, Nostalgia and Nonsense will feature lines written by some of Malta’s best-known talents, with Alex Manché on the piano.

Keep up with the arts:

Wednesday 11th April at 8pm: The Launch of the Subjective Map of Valletta - Fortress Builders Fortifications Interpretation Centre, Valletta.

Subjective Maps and Valletta 2018 Foundation

Valletta 2018 is keeping artists, curators and enthusiasts busy with its full programme of events. This Wednesday sees the launch of part of another V18-supported project, Subjective Maps, with the exhibition of the final printed Subjective Map of Valletta being revealed to the public. The maps are a result of workshops that have been taking place in six localities over the past 18 months, which invited people of various nationalities and ethnicities to share stories about their relationship with their locality through drawings of personal maps. The works produced include features familiar to each place as well as the dreams and wishes of the participants for their respective localities.

Thursday 12th April: How Not to Fight with the City – Blitz, Valletta & Thursday 12th April at 8:30am: Sacred & Profane - Danilo Arata – Palazzo de la Salle, Valletta.

Sacred and Profane - Danilo Arata

On Thursday, head further up the road to Blitz in Valletta, where its new resident artist, Natalia Pośnik will give a talk on her work, in which she combines her education in architecture with the medium of photography to dissect and discover the character of a city, and to explore the relationship between space and time. Entrance is free. If photography is your medium, why not also visit Sacred and Profane, Italian photographer Danilo Arata’s exhibition showing images taken to reflect upon the way the sacred and the profane are perceived around the world?

Thursday 12th April at 7pm: A Seat at the Table - Valletta Campus - University of Malta, Valletta.

MGRM

Bound to be a publishing phenomenon, the project entitled A Seat at the Table: The Coming of Age of the LGBTIQ Movement in Malta will be launched this Thursday. The history of the LGBTIQ Movement is documented in this tome, commissioned to Simon Bartolo who researched and authored the book, conducting a number of interviews with activists, politicians, policy makers and LGBTIQ community organisers.

There's always something for music fans:

Tuesday 10th–Thursday 12th April at 7pm: International Spring Orchestra Festival - Rising Stars & Aquilon Trio Concerts – Palazzo de la Salle, Valletta & Wednesday 11th April: Swing Nuages - Live - The Black Pearl, Ta’ Xbiex.

Aquilon Trio and the International Spring Orchestra Festival

The 12th edition of the International Spring Orchestra Festival is upon us, having started last week with a standout opening concert conducted by Brian Schembri. This week head to the beautiful Concert Hall in Palazzo de La Salle for two memorable concerts in the Rising Stars concert series, a special platform for outstanding young musicians to perform their repertoire before an audience. A third concert, taking place on Thursday evening, will see the international three-piece ensemble Aquilon Trio, consisting of Eulalie Charland on the violin, Massimo di Trolio with the clarinet and Maiko Mori on the piano, play a set including compositions by Stravinsky and Salter. Tickets can be found here. If jazz is more your thing, the Black Pearl have launched swing nights every second Wednesday of the month with Swing Nuages. Make sure to book your table on 00356 2133 8439 or 00356 7933 8439.

A scary mid-week:

Wednesday 11th April from 8pm – 10pm: Birgu Ghost Tour – starting from Café Riche, Birgu.

Ghosts and ghouls inhabit the old city of Vittoriosa, otherwise known as Birgu, the site of bloodshed and brutal sieges. This seaside port enclave is no stranger to drama, with rumours of hauntings and sightings cementing its reputation as one of the most spectral towns on the island. Find out more on this ghost tour, bound to make your hair stand on end! Tickets available here.
